The J4859D is an SFP (Small Form-factor Pluggable) fiber-optic transceiver module. More specifically: 1 Gigabit (1 Gbps) SFP, LC-connector, LX (long-reach) type, designed for single-mode fiber (SMF) . It supports built-in Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM / DDM) for status/diagnostic monitoring.

- 1 Gbps (1000BASE-LX) Fiber-Optic Module — supports data-link rates up to ~1.25 Gbps (typical 1 Gbps Gigabit Ethernet).
- 1310 nm Wavelength, Single-Mode Fiber (SMF) — designed for long-reach fiber links via 9/125 µm SMF.
- Duplex LC Optical Connector — standard LC-duplex interface for fiber cable connections.
- Hot-pluggable SFP Form Factor — can be inserted or removed from a supported switch without powering down the system
