A combined switch fabric + control board Designed for carrier-grade Ethernet routing platforms Installed in: MX240 MX480 MX960 It acts as the central “brain + fabric backbone” of the chassis rather than a user-facing interface card.

- Switch fabric: Moves traffic between line cards (MPCs) inside the chassis at high speed Control-plane integration: Hosts the Routing Engine (RE) directly on the board
- Clocking & synchronization: Provides centralized timing (Stratum 3 clock, GPS/BITS input)
