The Cisco 1721 is a compact, modular router designed for small to medium-sized branch offices and enterprise remote locations. It provides secure, reliable WAN connectivity with integrated services such as routing, firewall, NAT, and VPN capabilities. The router features two WAN Interface Card (WIC) slots for flexible network interface options and a single Fast Ethernet LAN port for local network connectivity. Powered by Cisco IOS software, the 1721 supports a wide range of protocols and security features including stateful inspection firewall (CBAC), dynamic and static NAT, and IPsec VPN encryption (DES, 3DES). Its modular design allows organizations to customize WAN interfaces (serial, ISDN, DSL, Ethernet) according to their network requirements. Though now end-of-life, the Cisco 1721 remains a reliable solution for legacy networks requiring secure branch office connectivity with moderate throughput needs.
